The easiest way to bring tons of flavor and velvety texture to any savory meal? This 5-Ingredient Cajun Cream Sauce.
As a busy mom with a gourmet palate, I love a quick and easy sauce to whip up to take my meals to the next level. This flavor-boosting, luxurious sauce takes about 5 minutes once your garlic is minced and uses simple ingredients.
Between the garlic and Cajun seasoning, this sauce brings a boldness that is only enhanced by the smooth cream and acid from the tomato paste. Delicious over a variety of meats, veggies, and starches, this versatile sauce is one you’ll want to keep in your back pocket.
It’s also delicious on pasta, but if you’re here because you’re seeking a Cajun pasta recipe, may I suggest this Creamy Cajun Salmon Pasta that is all made in one pot? Whatever you plan to serve this on, this sauce is ALWAYS a good idea.
Ingredients for Creamy Cajun Sauce
Here’s everything you need:
- Butter. Unsalted preferred as Cajun seasoning contains plenty of salt.
- Garlic. Freshly minced has more flavor than pre-minced, so if you are using pre-minced I recommend at least a full tablespoon.
- Tomato paste.
- Cream. Regular cream works best, but you can also use heavy whipping cream.
- Cajun seasoning. It’s important to note that the spice and salt level varies greatly depending on the brand of Cajun seasoning you’re using. I use my homemade Cajun seasoning in this recipe, which is more on par with a McCormick or generic brand salt and spice-wise. If you’re using something heavier on the salt and spice, like Slap Yo Mama, you may want to add a little less to this sauce.
Cajun Cream Sauce Tips and Tricks
Cook the Garlic First
This cream sauce with Cajun seasoning comes together very quickly. In fact, I would say mincing the garlic is the most tedious step in this whole recipe.
I usually crush the garlic with the side of my knife to easily peel it, then just mince it by hand. Once your garlic is minced, get the butter hot in a pan over medium heat.
Once the butter is completely melted and bubbling, add the minced garlic and cook until fragrant (about 1-2 minutes).
Then, stir in the tomato paste, cream, and Cajun seasoning. Bring it to a simmer and allow it to thicken for just about 2-3 minutes. That’s it!
Serving Your Cajun Sauce with Cream
One of my favorite things about this homemade sauce (aside from how easy it is to make), is its versatility.
Here, you see me serving it over some effortless, oven-roasted salmon that I seasoned simply with salt, pepper, and lemon juice.
It’s great over chicken, shrimp (or any seafood for that matter), and it’s even delicious on mashed potatoes, roasted veggies, and even slathered on a sandwich or used as a dipping sauce for a quesadilla. Seriously, the options are endless!

How to Properly Store and Reheat Creamy Cajun Sauce
This creamy homemade sauce will last up to a week in the refrigerator in an airtight container. I don’t recommend freezing any cream sauce for risk of separation.
To reheat the sauce, you can use the stove (preferred) or microwave. Heat on the stove on low until thoroughly heated. Stir frequently and continue to assess the consistency, adding extra cream when needed.
In the microwave, heat on the lowest setting in 30 second intervals, stirring in between. If it seems too thick, you can add a little extra cream or even milk to thin it out.
