This waffle recipe is quick and easy, with a simple waffle batter that requires just one bowl and 5 minutes to whip up. The waffle iron does the rest of the work! As a busy mom who loves fun food, this easy chocolate breakfast recipe is the top of my list!
These chocolate chip waffles, along with my Captain Crunch French Toast are highly requested in my house for birthday and Holiday breakfasts, and a staple for brunch entertaining.

Chocolate Chip Waffle Ingredient Highlights
I like to use unsalted butter, but you could also use salted butter and omit the added salt. I use light brown sugar, but dark brown sugar also works in this recipe.
Pretty much any milk will do here, including any percentage of dairy milk or any unsweetened non-dairy milk.
I used dark chocolate chips but milk or semi-sweet chocolate chips are also good!

How to Make Chocolate Chip Waffles at Home
Melt the butter either on the stovetop or in the microwave in 30-second intervals stirring in between until liquefied. Set it aside to cool for a bit so it doesn’t scramble your egg in your batter.
The batter for these sweet breakfast waffles is super simple and requires just a bowl and a whisk. Start by mixing together the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Then, add the egg, milk, vanilla extract, and melted butter. Whisk until there are no lumps and use a rubber spatula to scrape any dry ingredients clinging to the sides of the bowl into the batter.
Then, fold in your chocolate chips. Now, every waffle iron is a little bit different, but here are my best tips for getting great waffles, regardless of which iron you use:
- Get your waffle iron hot before spraying or adding batter.
- On that note, I do recommend spraying your waffle iron with oil or butter spray to avoid sticking. Make sure to spray just before adding the batter, not while your iron is heating up.
- Don’t overfill your waffle iron, you’ll wind up with a huge mess!

Serving Your Chocolate Chip Waffles from Scratch
These waffles are already nice and sweet and can honestly be enjoyed on their own or with a little dusting of powdered sugar. Of course, waffles are ALWAYS good with whipped cream and/or maple syrup!

How I Store and Reheat Leftover Waffles
These crispy chocolate chip waffles will last in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 3 days. You can also freeze the waffles to make them last up to 3 months.
The best way to reheat your waffles successfully is to reheat them in the oven at 350°F for about 5 minutes (or until heated thoroughly).
You can microwave them on high for 30-45 seconds per waffles, but this may make them a little bit rubbery, especially if you overdo it.
Either way you reheat waffles, don’t stack them on top of one another.
If you do freeze your waffles, allow them to thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating the homemade waffles by using one of the methods listed above.
Alternatively, you can save the waffle batter and make fresh waffles in your waffle iron within 3-5 days. Make sure the batter is covered or sealed in an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator.
