This super refreshing Citrus and Basil Gin Smash is the perfect happy hour cocktail to kick back and cool off with on a hot summer day.
I have a feeling the Fourth of July is going to look a little different this year. No gathering in crowds to watch fireworks, celebrating in bars, or big backyard parties to attend. But for me, on a hot summer Holiday, the best part is an ice-cold refreshing cocktail.
And even with a global pandemic, self-isolation, and recommended social distancing going on, the refreshing cocktail is a tradition I intend to keep this year.
You already know how much I love a great Smash (try my Bourbon Smash recipe), which is comprised of a spirit, a fruit, and a fresh herb.
This Citrus and Basil Gin Smash is without a doubt THE. MOST. REFRESHING. cocktail in my repertoire, making it the perfect drink of choice for your summertime happy hour and Independence Day treat. (Because let’s face it, the whole red, white, and blue everything is a little overdone).
Green tip: Growing your own herbs such as basil at home is a delicious way to reduce your environmental footprint. Homegrown herbs have zero associated food miles, no pesky plastic packaging, and are free of damaging fertilizers and chemicals. Plus, they are just so fresh and flavorful.
You Don’t Have To Love Gin to Love This Gin And Basil Gin Smash
Have no fear, non-gin-drinkers! Gin has not always been my favorite.
But when I heard the claim that Queen Elizabeth’s secret to a long life is her beloved gin cocktails, I did a deep dive on gin and all of its apparent health benefits.
It’s relatively low in sugar and calories compared to other spirits, and it’s full of antioxidants.
It can help with allergies, joint pain, and bloating. It’s great for your skin and circulation. AND the main ingredient is a superfood!
Are you convinced yet? Of course, gin is not a cure-all, and alcohol always needs to be consumed in moderation, but if you’re gonna drink, gin’s a good choice.
For newcomer gin drinkers like me, gin’s got a strong, unique taste. And ya gotta ease yourself in.
Trust me, start with this Citrus and Basil Gin Smash. The simple syrup and basil give you a little bit of sweetness that plays beautifully with the tart lemon and lime. The sparkling water brings that refreshing, bubbly, finish. The gin is present, but not overwhelming.
So, this cocktail’s got a good chance of helping you acquire a taste for it!
