This is not your average hummus! Think: fresh creamy hummus with subtle hints of sweet and spicy hot honey, with the heat turned up from extra crushed red pepper. This hot honey hummus is exciting and addictive; the perfect dip or spread to tickle your tastebuds.

Making hummus at home is genuinely easy, requiring only about 5 minutes of effort and a food processor. This spicy hummus recipe takes my classic homemade hummus recipe and adds hot honey to bring depth of flavor.

As a mom-on-the-go with a passion for bold flavor, this hot honey hummus meets all my criteria for a great recipe: easy, efficient, and elevated. With just one extra ingredient (namely hot honey), your hummus is instantly taken to the next level.

This hummus takes 5 minutes start to finish, and the cleanup is quick, too. Just dump everything into a food processor or blender and your work is done.

Having this delicious dip on hand to munch on or to add to sandwiches, bowls, or wraps (try it on this Vegetable Hummus Wrap!), means I know I’ll be eating good all week!

Ingredient Highlights for Spicy Hummus with Hot Honey

I used Mike’s Hot Honey here and found that 1 ½ tablespoons gave just the right amount of sweetness, and ½ teaspoon of red pepper flakes was perfect to kick up the heat.

However, you may find that the spice level of the hot honey varies from brand to brand. Remember you can always add more but you can’t take away. If you’re worried about the sweetness or spice level, start with less and taste as you go.

Hot Honey Hummus Tips and Tricks

How I Make Spicy Hot Honey Hummus in 5 Minutes

This homemade hummus recipe is designed with canned chickpeas in mind. Start by straining them by pouring them through a sieve or colander.

Make sure to catch the liquid that they’re submerged in. This liquid is called aquafaba, and you may need a couple of tablespoons of it later to thin out your hummus.

Set the aquafaba aside and throw the chickpeas in a food processor or high-powered blender with the rest of the ingredients and blend on high until smooth.

Then, taste it for sweetness, spice, and salt levels, but also to make sure you’re happy with the consistency. If you need to thin it out, slowly add some of the aquafaba with the blender on, until it’s just right.

I often don’t end up needing any extra aquafaba at all, but if I do, it’s never any more than 2 tablespoons.

Serving Your Spicy Hummus

This spicy hummus is one of my favorite dips. I usually serve it up with some extra hot honey and red pepper flakes on top. My favorite dippers for this hummus are toasted pita, cucumber slices, carrots, pretzels, pita chips, crackers, and sliced bell peppers.

But this hummus can be enjoyed with so much more! Slather it on a sandwich or wrap to bring big flavor, or top off a salad or quinoa bowl with it to really bring your meal to the next level.

You can even use this hummus as sauce for pasta like in this Hummus Pasta.

How to Properly Store Leftover Hummus

Homemade hummus stays fresh in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 1 week.

To extend the life of your hummus, you can freeze it for up to 6 months. Thaw it in the refrigerator and then enjoy it within 5-7 days.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes
Servings 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 (15. 5 ounce) can chickpeas aka garbanzo beans (both the beans and the liquid)
  • ¼ cup tahini
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice (½ lemon = approx. 2 tablespoons juice)
  • 1 clove garlic (peeled)
  • 1 ½ tablespoons hot honey
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Over a large bowl, use a sieve to strain your chickpeas, to separate the beans from the liquid (this liquid is called aquafaba, and you may use some later, so make sure to save it!).
1 (15. 5 ounce) can chickpeas aka garbanzo beans
  • Add chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, hot honey, crushed red pepper flakes, and salt to a high-powered blender or food processor and blend until smooth.
¼ cup tahini, 3 tablespoons olive oil, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 1 clove garlic, ½ teaspoon salt, 1 ½ tablespoons hot honey, ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper
  • Asses the consistency of your hummus. If it's too thick and chunky, add up to 2 tablespoons of aquafaba to loosen it. With the blender or food processor on high, add the aquafaba 1 tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is achieved.

Pro Tips

  • I used Mike’s Hot Honey (original) and found that 1 ½ tablespoons + ½ tablespoon of red pepper flakes brought a great balance of sweetness and spice. However, you can adjust this to your taste by adding more or less of either. Start small, taste, and add more to tailor it to your tastebuds!
