As an environmental scientist, I am always trying to find ways to make my own syrups and spice blends. Food preservatives, like pesticides, are harmful to the environment. They contain toxins that are harmful to plants, animals, and soil.

Homemade syrups and spice blends with all-natural ingredients allow you to avoid preservatives and lower your ecological footprint.

Plus, you don’t have to buy any extra pesky plastic containers!

Green tip: Despite recycling efforts, the sad truth is that only about 9% of plastics are recycled, leaving the rest to become microplastics.

Pumpkin Spice Simple Syrup Ingredients

This recipe will teach you how to make your own pumpkin pie spice from scratch, but you can also opt to use store-bought pumpkin spice with very similar results. It’s up to you!

Outside of the pumpkin pie spice, you’ll just need two simple pantry ingredients.

Here’s everything you’ll need:

  • Water. Dissolving the sugar and pumpkin spice in the water will form a syrup that makes integrating the flavors into other liquids much easier.
  • Brown sugar. It’s not a simple syrup without a sweetener, and the molasses-y brown sugar is the perfect complement to the pumpkin spice.
  • Store-bought pumpkin pie spice or make it from scratch with a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and all-spice.

Pumpkin Spice Simple Syrup Tips and Tricks

How to Make Pumpkin Pie Spice

You can easily buy pumpkin pie spice in the spice aisle at the store, or if you have all 5 ingredients on hand, you can just as easily make it from scratch!

You’ll need cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, all-spice, and cloves. Just be sure to use ground spices so they mix together seamlessly. Add all your spices to a small dish, stir, and voila! You’ve got pumpkin pie spice!

Dissolve the Sugar and Spices

To make a successful simple syrup, all you have to do is dissolve your sugar and spices into water. You are essentially bottling your sugar and spices into liquid form, so they can be added to other liquids and blend with your coffee, cocktail, or tea harmoniously.

The best way is just to add your water, sugar, and spices to a small pot or saucepan and bring it to a boil. Then, bring your heat all the way down and let it simmer, stirring occasionally until completely dissolved.

Over high heat, it usually only takes about 5 minutes for your syrup to come together. As soon as your sugar and spice blend is dissolved, you know your specialty syrup is ready!

Whisk Away

The best tool to use to help the sugar and pumpkin pie spice dissolve quickly and successfully into the water is a whisk!

Whisk once when you first add your ingredients to the pot. Then whisk every minute or so once you bring your syrup down to a simmer.

Whisking throughout the process will also make sure the sugar and spices don’t sink to the bottom of the pot and burn.

Storing Your Pumpkin Spice Simple Syrup

Once your simple syrup is ready, transfer it to a heat-safe jar with a lid, and allow it to come down to room temperature naturally.

Once it’s room temperature, you can place your jar of simple syrup in the refrigerator. Sealed, this pumpkin spice simple syrup will stay good for up to a month.

Shake before using it in your coffee, tea, or cocktail.

Smells wonderful and tastes wonderful but it’s not a syrup it’s super thick – not pourable. I followed directions exactly. Can I add water to thin out?

    1. Hi Ruthy!

Absolutely yes! You can certainly add more water to thin it out. Add it’s slowly, about 2 tablespoon at a time to assess the consistency as you go. It’s a thicker syrup for sure (you want it to be able to hold its own in coffee!) but it should certainly be pourable. I’ll add a note tot he recipe card. Thank you!
