As a busy mom who loves to bake, it’s a priority for me to keep my cookie recipes simple. This sugar cookie recipe with sprinkles requires just 8 ingredients, no chilling time, and can be shaped with your hands and baked— no need for rolling the dough and cutting it out!
Plus, rainbow sprinkles just instantly bring vibrant color and flavor to any dish (see also: Funfetti Brownies!), so you know you can’t go wrong here. This recipe is 100% kid-approved by my picky 5-year-old. 😉
Rainbow Sprinkles Sugar Cookies Ingredient Highlights
I recommend using unsalted butter, but if salted butter is all you have on hand, that will work, too. Just make sure to omit the added salt. Most importantly, make sure your butter is softened! For help, peep my article on how to quickly soften butter.
My Favorite High Quality Sprinkles
When sprinkles are the star of the cookie, it’s important to get high-quality ones to bake with! My favorite rainbow sprinkles are from Hoosier Hill Farm, who have been producing wholesome products with big flavor ingredients for over 20 years!
I love their rainbow sprinkles because the color doesn’t bleed into the dough, they hold their shape while baking, and they aren’t too sweet, keeping the flavor balance of the sugar cookie intact.
You can buy Hoosier Hill Farm Rainbow Sprinkles directly from their website (shipping is free!).

How I Make My Sprinkles Cookies
How I Make Sugar Cookie Dough
This sugar cookie dough is super simple and requires just one bowl. Start by creaming your softened butter and sugar until its well-combined and aerated. I like to use a hand mixer on high. A stand mixer works, too.
Then, add the egg and vanilla extract and beat until just combined. Finally, mix in your flour, baking powder, and salt.
Then, add ¼ cup of the rainbow sprinkles and use a rubber spatula to gently fold them into the dough.
How I Get the Most Colorful Sprinkles Cookies
Add the remaining ½ cup of sprinkles to a shallow bowl. I highly recommend using a cookie scoop to shape your dough, but if you don’t have one, each cookie will require about 3 heaping tablespoons of dough.
One at a time, place the dough balls into the rainbow sprinkles, and roll it around so that is completely covered in a layer of colorful sprinkles.
How to Perfectly Bake Drop Sugar Cookies with Sprinkles
Make sure to line your baking sheet and preheat your oven to 375°F. I use a large, 18×26-inch baking sheet and place 6 cookies on it. You want to make sure you leave at least a couple of inches in between each cookie to allow them to spread in the oven.
Bake for 12 minutes on the top rack and transfer to a cooling rack. If you want perfectly round cookies, you can use a large round cookie cutter in a circular motion around each cookie while they are still hot to reshape them.
How I Store My Sprinkle Sugar Cookies
Store your sprinkle cookies in an airtight container. At room temperature, they will last about 2 weeks.
Pro tip: If you want your cookies to remain soft and chewy, store them with a piece of bread (it’s the perfect use for that end piece!). The bread actually creates a humid environment and keeps your cookies moist.
You can also opt to freeze your baked cookies for up to a year. I prefer to freeze unbaked dough, so that I can have a freshly baked cookie at the drop of a hat.
This is a great option if you want to make your dough ahead of time. Just form your cookies, coat them in sprinkles, and place them in a freezer-safe bag. You can then bake them directly from the freezer (you may want to add 1-2 minutes to the baking time).
The dough will last up to a year in the freezer.

I am a sucker for anything sprinkles! So when I saw this recipe I knew I just had to try it. These are crazy, addictive good!! It’s a soft, buttery sugar cookie that doesn’t skimp on having that wow factor. I’ve only found one other successful sprinkle sugar cookie recipe over the years and this definitely my new go-to given how easy and the quickness of making them. My only regret was not making full batch of cookies because now I just wish I had more : /
